assuming that（假設/如果）本身是用作條件狀語(yǔ)的分詞短語(yǔ)，因此可以把它視作引導條件從句的連詞，相當于if 的用法。條件從句有兩種情況：一種是真實(shí)語(yǔ)氣，表示基本與事實(shí)相符；一種是虛擬語(yǔ)氣，表示不符合或不一定符合事實(shí)。assuming that 的用法也是如此。
如對下面句子的兩種不同表述：
就算你是對的，這件事也沒(méi)什么我可以做的。
Assuming you're right, there's not much I can do about it. 【心里承認對方是對的，只是口頭上不服氣】
Assuming you were right, there were not much I could do about it. 【明知對方不對，】
就算會(huì )談取得了進(jìn)展，也未免太微不足道，且為時(shí)太晚了吧?
